Webcam Troubleshooting

Webcam troubleshooting is an important technique for computer users to know. The type of troubleshooting required varies depending upon the type of web cam used. There are both internal and external web cams devices.

Troubleshooting internal web cams

Today, many web cams are built directly into computers, especially notebook models. In most cases, these web cams do not usually require any software to run, but they do require updated versions of Flash and Java. When an internal web cam is not booting up properly, it typically means that there is a software issue. Check all software and update the latest versions of Flash and Java. If internal web cams are showing choppy video, close all other programs before video conferencing. Any audio problems are easily resolved by adjusting the volume and speaking closer to the computer, which has a microphone built internally.

Troubleshooting other web cams

The most common issue with external webcams is a loose connection. Check to see that the USB cable is firmly plugged in before usage. Another common issue is not having the proper software for the web cam installed. Before the webcam can function properly, install the software that comes with it. Configure the programs to work with the webcam by changing the settings to recognize the new device.

By updating all software, including Flash and Java, almost all web cam problems are fixable. Other ways to troubleshoot include checking cables, configuring other programs and closing all other programs before using the camera.
