Using Your Webcam as a Security Camera

Using your webcam as a security camera provides even more functionality from this handy computer accessory. Many laptops already come with built-in webcams, and stand alone models are relatively inexpensive as well. This access and affordability makes a high-end security camera setup possible. The only real cost is the webcam itself.

Setting up security

Point your webcam to the area you want to monitor. If you have never owned a webcam before, follow the simple installation instructions, and plug in the device with a USB cable. Install the software included with your webcam to make sure the settings are correct. Keep in mind the area you want to monitor when purchasing your webcam. Avoid putting your computer on display for potential thieves by purchasing a longer USB extension cord or a wireless camera device.

Working with Dorgem

For best results, download and install a software program called Dorgem webcam utility. Run this application, and select your webcam model from the drop down menu. Choose the "Preview" option to see what is being viewed. Adjust your settings if necessary. To adjust the contrast or brightness, select the "Source" option.

Starting the transformation

To turn your webcam into a security camera, select "Options" and check the "Use motion detection" box. Select the "Store settings" option, then click "OK" to save. Enter a name for the area you want to monitor, and make sure the "Enable" box is checked. Set the interval to 2 seconds, and save the settings. Test the Dorgem application by moving around in front of the camera. Try this for approximately 2 minutes, then check the folder you selected for the settings to make sure the image captures are present. If you get stuck, the Dorgem software offers a large amount of resources for troubleshooting.
