Learn to Video Chat With Skype

Skype is an application that allows you to easily make voice and video calls over the Internet. Get in on the fun by using Skype to communicate with your friends and loved ones around the world. These helpful tips make it easy to learn to video chat with Skype.
Getting familiar
The first step in using Skype is to download and install the application. You can find it at their website: www.skype.com. Once you install the program, make sure your status is set to "Online." Next, check your video. Go to the "Options" selection under "Tools." On the left side of the window, click the "Video" button. Select your personal webcam from the drop down list, and make sure your video appears in the window. If your video does not appear, consult your camera manual or go online. Check that you chose the right option from the drop down menu that corresponds with the model of your camera. If you see your video in the window, then your webcam is working properly.
Searching for a friend
Exit the window and return to the Skype homepage. In order to communicate with this application, you have to find a friend who has a PC webcam and a Skype account at a different location. If you have friends set up on Skype, you are able to video chat with them. Add that person as a contact by clicking on the "Contacts" selection and then by searching for Skype users. Type all the information you know, such as name, location or email. Once you locate your friend, add him or her to your contact list.
Taking the plunge
In order to use Skype, you must wait until your contact is online. When this happens, the icon next to your friend's name turns to green. Click his or her name, and choose the "Video call" button on the right. If your friend accepts your call, you connect after a brief delay. Make sure you can see and hear him or her clearly, and then start the conversation. Video chatting services like Skype rely on high-speed Internet access. Do not try to do other things that take up a lot of bandwidth, such as downloading files or streaming music, while you are chatting. This results in a choppy and slow Skype experience. Chat in a well lit room, and keep the background noise to a minimum for the best video chatting experience.
